Palaeoecological and genetic analyses of Late Pleistocene bears in Asiatic Russia

چکیده

Brown bears are one of the few large carnivore species that survived final Pleistocene wave extinctions, perhaps in part owing to their wide ecological plasticity, variety forms and polyphagia. Although brown bear has become a well-studied system, many questions remain regarding ecological, trophic genetic diversity throughout distribution. For example, knowledge about Asiatic Russian from Late arctic tundra steppe, an ecosystem with no analogue modern times, is sparse. Here we compared diets, morphometry affinities based on broadly sampled subfossil remains Russia. Collecting sites included Ural Mountains, lower reaches Irtysh River, upper Ob Altai Mountains western Siberia, Indigirka–Kolyma Lowlands northwestern Chukotka. An extremely specimen middle Indigirka (41 090 14C BP) lived landscapes treeless shrubs wet meadows had diet composed principally herbivorous mammals. A Chukotka (25 880 BP), much smaller size, close bears. These two NE may comprise previously undiscovered, but extinct, lineage. At end (MIS 3 MIS 2), River Valley Urals periglacial forest-steppes those southern conditions steppe. valley Urals, as well ancient bears, were characterized by varied diet, polyphagia vegetarianism. In living proportions different dietary foods primarily related food availability, which depends geographical zone climatic conditions. We conclude same was true for Siberia.

Ancient DNA analyses reveal high mitochondrial DNA sequence diversity and parallel morphological evolution of late pleistocene cave bears.

Cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) existed in Europe and western Asia until the end of the last glaciation some 10,000 years ago. To investigate the genetic diversity, population history, and relationship among different cave bear populations, we have determined mitochondrial DNA sequences from 12 cave bears that range in age from about 26,500 to at least 49,000 years and originate from nine caves. Th...

Genetic admixture in the late pleistocene.

The replacement hypothesis of modern human origins holds that the original population of modern humans expanded throughout the world, replacing existing archaic populations as it went. If this expanding population interbred with the peoples it replaced, then some archaic mitochondria might have been introduced into the early modern gene pool. Such mitochondria would be recognizable today becaus...

in current study, 63 samples of bat populations collected from differ regions were used for evaluating the geographic variations. twenty cranial and dental characters for traditional morphometric and landmarks method on the ventral, dorsal skull and mandible for geometry morphometric studies were used. statistical analyses of traditional morphometric and geometry morphometric data indicated low...

Genomic sequencing of Pleistocene cave bears.

Despite the greater information content of genomic DNA, ancient DNA studies have largely been limited to the amplification of mitochondrial sequences. Here we describe metagenomic libraries constructed with unamplified DNA extracted from skeletal remains of two 40,000-year-old extinct cave bears. Analysis of approximately 1 megabase of sequence from each library showed that despite significant ...
